A Level Media Studies

A Level Media Studies is about how we see the world through a wide range of communication forms. Students do not have to have studied GCSE Media Studies to take this A Level course. However, at least a C grade in GCSE English Language is an entry requirement.




Unit 1: Foundation Production G321 (worth 25% of the A Level)

Students will plan, research, film and evaluate the opening sequence of a new fiction film. This unit will allow students to learn to use the video cameras and digital editing software. All of the work is presented via a blog which answers questions set by OCR. Examples of previous students' work can be seen via the college blog hub here

Unit 2: Key Conceprs and Skills - written examination 6322 (worth 25% of the A Level)

Students study the conventions of moving image TV fiction and answer one question on a brief extract watched in the exam. The second part of the exam looks at the production processes of the music industry and examines how audiences are targeted.




Unit 3: Advanced Portfolio G324 (worth 25% of the A Level)

Students choose from a list of 13 briefs, covering a range of media. Many students choose to make a pop music video. There are also ancillary tasks such as creating the digipak cover for the release of the album and a magazine advert to promote the album. As with AS, all of work (including research, planning and evaluation) is presented via a blog. Previous students' work can be seen here

Unit 4: Critical Perspectives G325 (worth 25% of the A Level)

Section A —Questions which require students to analyse their production work within a theoretical context

Section B – Students write one essay question from a choice of either Media and Collective Identity or Postmodernism. Students study a range of television, film, music, advertisements, newspapers and digital media texts which they refer to within the examination.

Career Prospects

Many students go on to follow media-related courses in Higher Education. An AS/A level in Media Studies is especially useful if you wish to follow a career in Journalism, Film, Television, Radio or Advertising.



Specialist Resources

Available to the department are a wide range of resources such as the Media magazine elearning journal, Film Club, and filming and editing equipment (cameras, tripods, steadicam, green screen, ladder dolly, Adobe Premier editing software).


What students need to bring to lessons:

- Pencil cases

- Homework will be set weekly except during controlled conditions assessments
- Photographs – students will sometimes choose to take images for their coursework out of lesson time

GCSE Media Studies is composed of three units. One is examined and the other two are coursework units. In this course, students study these media forms: television, film, advertisements, magazines and multi-media technology. Students look at how they are produced, what they mean and for whom they are intended. They will learn about them from analysing media texts, researching on their own and producing their own media texts.



Examination Paper B322 (worth 40% of the GCSE):

Section A: Students watch an extract from an action adventure movie in the examination and answer questions based on representation, camera work, sound, editing and mise-en-scene.


Section B: Students study two TV comedies from different TV channels. The examination questions are based on audience and institution. Students should be prepared to explain which pleasures the comedies offer to audiences and explain their scheduling.



Coursework Portfolio B321 (worth 30% of the GCSE):


This unit is based on the teen movie genre and includes three elements:

- An essay comparing two teen movies
- A practical assignment making two posters for a new teen movie
- The research, planning and evaluation of the posters



Coursework Portfolio B324 (worth 30% of the GCSE):

This unit is based on magazines and includes three elements:

- The research and planning of a new magazine for a targeted audience
- The creation of 4/5 pages of a new magazine (front cover, contents/editorial page(s) and a double page spread article.
- The evaluation of the magazine pages created
